FAQs MND

FAQs

MND is a life-limiting neurological condition that affects the nerves (motor neurons) responsible for muscle movement. As the disease progresses, individuals experience increasing difficulty with walking, speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Despite its challenges, quality of life can be preserved through compassionate, tailored support.

The causes of MND are not fully understood. While most cases appear sporadically, around 5–10% are inherited through family genes. Other possible risk factors include environmental exposures and immune system dysfunction, though no single cause has been confirmed.

Early symptoms can be subtle and may include:

  • Muscle weakness or stiffness (especially in the arms or legs)
  • Difficulty with speech or swallowing
  • Muscle cramps or twitching
  • Fatigue or unsteady walking

There’s no single test for MND, so diagnosis involves ruling out other conditions. Your neurologist may conduct:

  • A full neurological exam
  • MRI scans
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Blood and genetic tests

There is no known cure at present, but ongoing research continues to offer hope. In the meantime, a multidisciplinary care approach can significantly improve comfort, mobility, and independence.
